AJA VIDEOS

From 2010 to 2012, AJA documented the Khmer Krom communities we worked with through hundreds of photographs, audio recordings and video footage. The result of those efforts were two short videos. The first, Same Same But Different: The Khmer Krom of the Mekong Delta, details the narratives of Khmer Krom villagers who talk about cultural practices that distinguish them from the central Khmer of Cambodia. They talk about the subtle differences and the broad similarities that link them to the Khmer people of Cambodia. The second video, Same Same But Different: The Khmer Krom & the Khmer Rouge Tribunal focuses more specifically on their experiences with respect to the ECCC and their hopes for justice and reconciliation for the Khmer Krom.

You can find the English version of Same Same But Different: The Khmer Krom & the Khmer Rouge Tribunal here. The Khmer version is here.

ECCC TRIAL FOOTAGE:

November 23, 2012

The testimony by Khmer Krom civil party Chau Ny, led by international civil party lawyer Mahdev Mohan, can be found here and part II is here.

This was a very significant hearing as Mr. Chau Ny was permitted to ask questions directly of Khieu Samphan, something that has not happened before at the ECCC. The full Cambodia Tribunal Monitor report of the hearing can be found here.

May 23, 2013

Mr. Chau Ny’s decision to pose questions directly to Mr. Khieu Samphan prompted the Defense to re-call Mr. Chau to testify on the facts he raised in November 2012. As a result, Mr. Chau was re-examined on May 23, 2013. In an unprecedented move, Mr. Khieu Samphan chose to respond directly to Mr. Chau. Mr. Chau was also permitted to speak of his suffering once again.

The footage of this hearing is here. The full CTM report of the hearing is here.

AUDIO

Oral testimonies are important records for legal proceedings. But the stories can also be told in other ways, by being juxtaposed with existing archival materials documenting how the Cold War affected Indo-China and how the American-Vietnam war affected Cambodia. An initial experiment in just such a juxtaposition can be found here.
